Field trip to Semiahmoo Library

This week we had a beautiful sunny day to explore our community. We walked to the Semiahmoo Library to explore a wonderful place in our community where we can enjoy books. Thank you to all of the parents who helped supervise our field trip!

The children listened to a felt story and used their knowledge of rhyming words to predict what was coming next.

All of the children were VERY excited about getting their own library cards.

Students looking at some books in the fire truck.

Listening to the librarian tell a silly story about Charles the dog.

Enjoying some time with his books.

Taking your child to the library is a wonderful way to foster a love of reading and excitement around books!

Writing that made me smile

I recently shared with the class that I am expecting a baby in April. We have been working lots on writing stories.

Today a student wrote this story.  It made my day! ❤️

Tumblebooks

Today we worked with our teacher librarian and explored a really great website Tumblebooks.com on the school iPads.

This is a website that has many Ebooks for the children to read. There are story books, novels and nonfiction titles for them to choose and listen to. As the story is being read, the words light up so students can read and follow along.

If you are interested in checking this website out with your child at home I will be sending home the username and password needed to access the site. Keep your eyes open for it in their planners!

Enjoying reading the same story together side by side.

Students reading and listening to books of their choice.

Field Trip to Fire Hall 13

First I would like to thank my wonderful colleague Ms. Hrupp for taking such good care of our class this week! I was concerned the field trip would have to be canceled if I was not able to be there, so thank you so much Ms. Hrupp for taking our class to the fire hall! She told me the children had a BLAST and that it was a great opportunity for the kids.

Having lots of fun!

Love this!

They got to sit in the fire truck!

They each got a turn using the fire hose!

Rescuing a firefighter!

Fire safety is very important and we were very fortunate to have a hands on experience at Fire Hall 13!

Surrey Nature Centre- Halloween in the Forest

We had an awesome time at the Surrey Nature Centre! We were fortunate the rain held off on our forest adventures. Throughout the program the forest fairy toured us around and introduced us to 4 different forest animals (an owl, crow, raccoon and bat). We learnt lots of interesting facts about each of these animals and realized they aren't so scary after all! Here is a peak of our field trip:

We used our senses to make observations about our surroundings.

 Raccoon hand and foot prints.

We used our sense of touch to feel raccoon fur.

We looked at real bat skulls, they were tiny!

A broken apart owl pellet! We learnt that owls can't digest all of their food so they have to spit back up the remains, this is called an owl pellet.

We used binoculars to see like an owl. Owls have binocular vision.

The owl and crow demonstrated how quiet owls are when they fly by flapping their feathers in front of us. Owls have very special feathers making them almost impossible to hear.

Lastly, we had to work in partners to build the owl a birds nest. This was a favourite activity. Here is the result

Thanks again to all the parents who volunteered their time to drive and help make our day possible!

Pumpkin Day

We had so much fun at pumpkin day today! We started by heading to the field to pick a pumpkin

Next, we had to do a silly photo!

We practiced reading and tracking our words with a witch's finger.

We read a story called 'Pumpkin Jack.' When Tim carves his first pumpkin, he names it Jack. When it finally begins to decay, he puts it in the garden rather than in the trash bin. As the months go by, Jack grows moldy, sinks into the leaves, hides in the snow, and finally sprouts a new plant. By the next fall, there are plenty of pumpkins for Tim to share at school. He keeps just one for himself and when he finishes carving it, he says "Welcome back, Jack!" This story is the perfect example of the life cycle of a pumpkin.

Next we started our investigations! We were making predictions, using our observation skills and mathematical thinking!

We recorded our thinking and results:

We took a class vote on how to carve our pumpkin!

These faces were priceless as the students helped me clean the pumpkin.

We carved our pumpkin and named him Jack.

Happy Pumpkin Day!
