Apple baking and math games!

We finished apple week with a couple more fun activities!

First we played an apple math game where students needed to add one more to the number they rolled.

Next, we had a special activity today! We baked Apple Oatmeal Muffins. All of the students got to help prepare the recipe. Our classroom and school smelled delicious today. We made extras for all the teachers to enjoy at lunch!

HAPPY FRIDAY!

Apple Week

This week we have been busy learning all about apples!

We talked about what kinds of things we can make from apples. Here are a few items that I brought in for our classroom display

We dissected an apple, learned the proper vocabulary and labelled all of the parts. To get the kids excited about the week they each got to take home a home-made apple cookie!

The next day we had a taste taste. We tasted a Fuji apple, a Granny Smith apple and a Red Delicious apple. We graphed our favourite variety using post it notes and brainstormed words that described the apples we tasted. We later used those words to write our apple poems.

During centre time the kids explored using an apple as a stamp.

Today we talked about all the different ways we can make the number 10! We did a part-part-whole activity where students moved the seeds on the apple and recorded their number sentences. The kids couldn't believe all the combinations of 10!

We have had so much fun this week… the kids are in for one more day of apples tomorrow and a little surprise!

Literacy - Dear Zoo

Over the past few days we have been reading the book Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell. The story begins with a letter to the zoo asking for a pet, this results in a succession being dispatched - all of them containing highly unsuitable pets!

Day 1 - Our early literacy teacher introduced the story to the class through an engaging felt board story. Students had to predict what animal would be in the box. We decided this was a fun story and we wanted to be authors and re-create a class version of Dear Zoo!

Day 2- We re-read the story together and discussed the adjectives that were used to DESCRIBE why they had to send the animal back. Students did a think-pair-share and came up with their zoo animal.

Day 3 - Today we all read the story together and came up with a word to describe the zoo animal we had selected. Below are some of the students working hard on writing and illustrating their page in our book.

Stay tuned... the authors have a bit more work to do before our class book will be finished!
